DC 133

Dominik Diamond on Gamesmaster.

We’re immensely honoured this week to bring you Dominik Diamond, presenter of the greatest show about games ever to grace television screens; Gamesmaster.

For nearly seven years (barring one brief hiatus) Dominik presented this classic British production with a mixture of wit, charm and innuendo sending challengers, both unknown and celebrity into gaming tasks set by a techno-wizard played by Patrick Moore and commentating on their progress as though it were the most exciting sports action ever. The formula worked and Gamesmaster consistently drew audiences from the 16-Bit era all the way through to 1998 when the Playstation held full sway.

Dominik has been a journalist, and a DJ for XFM simce then and has moved to Nova Scotia; Canada with his family. He very kindly gave us two hours of his time to reminisce about his experiences, and the interview we now have here is probably one of our favourites in all our long years of podcasting.

You’ll definitely find out some things you didn’t know, learn behind the scenes tidbits and see how Dominik got in and out of the show. For those new to it, YouTube is a vertitable treasure trove of clips and if you’d like to see shows recommended by Dominik himself, that followed in Gamesmaster’s footsteps, check out Consolevania and Video Gaiden.

Dominik “Big Purple Column” Diamond?! Impressive stuff! Looking forward to it (not appearing on iTunes yet).

Episode is up on iTunes now. :)

well done guys, best guest yet

Sorry that this one took a while to appear guys. It took a while longer than usual to produce, but I think it’s worth it.

Great show guys. It was fascinating to listen to.

One suggestion though: send him a copy of Rock Band 2 instead of FIFA 10, as Mr Diamond clearly needs to be re-educated about the music game genre!

FIFA 10 is already on the way. I think we should soften him up first by just saying positive things about the music rhythm genre. There’s also the issue of instruments.

great show guys and well done for all the people who donated.

James email us your address and we’ll send you a bundle of PAX-related goodies.

E mail sent. Thanks

Wow. Just Wow. How the hell did you get him on the show? Oh wait, you just asked him didn’t you? heh. He’s certainly a character and he was very unforgiving over the 3rd season of the show. Mr Fletcher had no interest in video games and it showed, big time.

An excellent coup there sirs, long may your successes continue.

So I finally got to listen to the show last night, and I think I just have to thank you two sirs for such a warming show with the legend that is Dominik Diamond. I spent last night feeling more like I was just a couple of months of turning 16 rather than 36!

I was, it’s fair to say, a relativity avid viewer of GM, and also recall him having a show in more recent years on one of the cable channels which if I recall was called ‘When Games Attack’. And even more recently the back page of PC Zone, which was as he said one of the greatest magazines of the 90s, and which can still raise a smile to this day. I don’t recall ‘The One’ magazine, but do ‘Zero’ which was a multiformat mag which indeed later became PC Zone.

So once again that you all three for giving me such a wonderful journey back through my formative years, it’s been emotional.

I’ve been listening to you’re podcasts for a while now but that has to be the best I’ve listened to yet.
Although the laughing out loud did prompt a few looks from my work collegues.

Cheers guys, great show!

Great work fellows. I thought I’d done well getting Martin Hollis on but this was quite a coup.
I’ll see your Dominik Diamond and raise you Gabe Newell, Peter Molyneux, Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima on GamerDork next year… maybe…

Finally got to listen to the whole episode. Was a bit honored that the episode I guested on regarding game preservation was his intro to the Digital Cowboys, and that he thought highly of it. :-)
