Man, do you live in my head? Exactly voicing my thoughts like that, it's uncanny.
I've been trying to get back into gaming after that long parenting toddlers break but don't want to sit alone in front of the screen anymore. But splitscreen never works right for us, it's always too small, you don't see shit that shoots at you...
The Lego games have made coop natural, playing together on one screen, no split, no headset, just next to each other. With these games I finally got my husband back into gaming.

Chris,

I'm not going to delete this comment as I believe in having an opinion that's good or bad but you will have to make constructive criticism in more than two syllables otherwise next time your post will be removed.

You are quite right on the single player games, although not obvious to many perhaps, they can prove to be great shared experiences, as we fondly remember playing through the old Zeldas together. Funnily enough it was the adding of a 'co-op' mode to Maria galaxy that in the end resulted in us not playing the game at all!
There may also be an article in our experiences f playing WoW as a couple, both the immense fun we had along the way, and the struggle we still go through not playing any more ;)

Well done, Stex, another fantastic article.

I fully agree with you regarding the Lego games, they have a special unquantifiable appeal when it comes to co-op play. Lizz & I played through the entirety of Lego Star Wars The Original Trilogy together and it was amazingly good fun. Like yourself, I think the fact that it has no real penalty for dying plays a huge part in its appeal as there isn't that overriding pressure to perfectly succeed in every situation. Also, having young nephews that constantly play this game every time I see them, screams how well the difficulty level for kids is pitched.

Now I don't think that the answer to all co-op gaming is to make the experience easy, it just seems to work especially well with the charm of Lego.

When it comes to competitive multiplayer/co-op gaming, that's always been a slightly harder sell for us as a couple and normally becomes a less enjoyable experience as there is a small amount of resentment every time one of you gets the kill on each other. If you are physically in the same room, you get that look or over the headset that slight sigh and yes, I do fall into that trap when I'm the one being killed.

As I will mention in the show this week, I think there's also fun to be had in single player games as a couple, whether that will be through participating in the enjoyment of unraveling a narrative or letting the controller go for an hour or so whilst Lizz enjoys exploring a game world searching for flags and other collectible items.
