Digital Cowboys: Episode 114 – Room 101

This week represents the combined efforts of no less than twelve individuals. This is a guest-extravaganza like we’ve never had before, but we’re not just doing a normal show so pay attention.
Room 101 is a fictitious place where all the misery in the world goes to die. It originated in Orwell’s 1984 as a room which contained your worst fear and it inspired a British TV show where guests would come on and campaign to have things they hated put there forever. Sandals worn with socks, people who talk loudly in restaurants and lateness are the type of things that get submitted. The hosts job is to attempt to form a counter-argument as to why that thing should stay out and free to annoy people.
We did this, with video games as the theme and guests from eight other shows. So you get…
1. Rob Borges from Gamers with Jobs
2. Cooper Hawks from Gamehounds
3. Daniel Floyd from Talking About These
4. Bobby Blackwolf from All Games Radio
5. Tim from Gamehounds and GridCycle (Also the sorely missed show The Widget)
6. Chris O Regan from The Superhappyfuntimeshow
7. David Turner and Michael Fox from Joypod
8. Chris and Kelly Brown from The Married Gamers
All of them came on for an interview, all of them put forward at least one loathsome aspect of video gaming to be cast into the fiery pit and we did our level best to keep them out. What it makes for is a damn good and often hilarious bumper episode. It’s longer than normal so you might want to do this in two sittings, but do check out the shows noted above and and have a listen (or a look in some cases). We wouldn’t have them on if we didn’t want to hear what they had to say. Many thanks to everyone involved. This was a long time coming, but it was worth it.

Cool. Can’t wait to listen to it!
Nice idea with getting multiple people involved. Good stuff.
nice one guys, looking forward to listening in the week
I’ve advertised the 101 podcast on rllmuk. Should bring even more new listeners.
i think that cosmetic paid dlc is ok especially in multiplayer games. As soon as something is charged for anything that changes a game/gives an advantage there is a barrier to entry for new players. Imagine the outcry if you had to pay for the best gun in MW2 multi. Also if it’s cosmetic its 100% optional which means that you do not have to buy it at any price. On the arument of price rises. The price will move to the highest amount people will pay regardless of cosmetic dlc. We are participating in a free market thats how it works.
Finally got through the episode after my podcast player went a little crazy and kept rebooting my phone! So good to hear all the different folks on one podcast, great reach out episode. It became clear though that there are a lot of things in games that are just indefensible!
On the downside I now have another bunch of podcasts to check out and I barely get through the ones I try to listen to now!!
Excellent, well put together show. Rather let down by the idiot who banged on, and on, and ON about Korean MMO’s and Dave ‘No not the bandana wearing one’ Perry. Other than that, a well put together show.
Brilliant idea for a show, lads. I really enjoyed this one. Well done!
Great. Really liked the format of this show, never heard anyone else do anything like it. Good mix of guests as well, Joypod boys in particular. Go to agree with Superslug about the Cosmetic DLC – I would far rather have to pay for that than for something that actualy makes a difference to a game. Can’t blame anyone for trying to make money, anyone mug enough to buy it, well that’s there choice.
Absolutely brilliant show, guys. I can’t believe you cast big breasted women to Room 101 though!
IMO they’re harmless and good to look at. Games don’t have a shortage of well buffed male characters these days and this doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
More boobs please!
[WORDPRESS HASHCASH] The poster sent us ’0 which is not a hashcash value.
Sometimes I enjoy seeing ludicrously big-breasted women in games; equally, I don’t mind the steroid-filled Marcus Fenix characters, either. It’s fantasy, not reality. I don’t think it should be the same for every game – that every character be a wet dream of male wish-fulfillment – but it has a place in gaming just as it does in films.
I remember playing Ninja Gaiden 2. Yes, that game is INCREDIBLY sexist, but it’s all the more humorous for it. I honestly couldn’t stop laughing at certain points at the offensiveness of it all. In a sense, the over-sexualisation of the characters is part of the fun.
At the same time, I would like more complex playable women characters in video games, because that’s an avenue that hasn’t yet been explored that well. I was watching Veronica Mars with my sister the other day and that is a type of character that work so well in a video game, and I also think would be equally as interesting to both a male and female audience.
Oh, and don’t out cosmetic DLC into room 101; put in the people who buy it, instead.
As for the big breasted women in video games, I think Daniel Floyd’s views on the topic are the best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8ZVZRsy8N8
